PALAS Receives 2017 People Profile Charity Award, Now Planning First PALAS Telethon

Goal is to Award 100 New Scholarships in 2017 in Jamaica

The Peace And Love Academic Scholarship, Inc. (PALAS, Inc.) was recently recognised for their philanthropic work in investing in Jamaica’s children education at the People Profile Charity of the Year Award on June 18.

Ruel ‘Rula’ Brown

The Award,  founded by Dr. Allan Cunningham, recognises ordinary people doing extraordinary things was held at Bailey Hall in Florida. Founder Ruel ‘Rula’ Brown is thankful for the recognition and honour, but already his mind is ticking away trying to garner funds to award at least 100 scholarships from the over 300 applications received in 2017.

“I am truly elated and excited for PALAS, Inc. winning the 2017 People Profile Charity of the Year Award as this will provide more opportunities for the well deserving students by creating awareness to potential donors,” said Brown on the victory even as he went into campaign mode for more funding.

“Due to the more than 300 high school and college applications received, funding and sponsors are still being sought for the 2017 season, so we encourage interested persons to donate via PayPal at www.PALAS1.org,” is the appeal coming from him.

Brown who has a passion for the struggling children of Jamaica said his ultimate vision is to each year award a scholarship to all who apply.

PALAS Marketing Director, Mellissa Ladysong who received the award on behalf of the organisation said she felt honoured at being given such a prestigious award”.

“Young people often have to drop out of school because they cannot afford the tuition to complete their education. We have an opportunity to help our Caribbean young people obtain a good education but I never thought it would lead to this kind of recognition” she said.

PALAS, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organisation, was founded in 2010 after the brutal murder of a young singer, Vanessa Campbell in Portmore, Jamaica. Rula Brown of the RulaBrownNetwork (RBN) in Atlanta, GA created PALAS, Inc. to provide scholarships to commemorate Vanessa’s passing. Since then, PALAS has awarded a total of 384 scholarships valued at approx. US$205,000.00 (JA$23.00 million).

Over fifty (50) university students have graduated from the program including; doctors, lawyers, artists, nurses, engineers and scientists. Some of whom are now giving back.

On July 1st 2017 there will be a final push for donations during the first PALAS Telethon. It will be a one day event starting at 9:00 am ET and ending at 9:00 pm ET. Several Caribbean, American and UK Online Radio networks will dedicate shows to PALAS, including RulaBrownNetwork.com, TheLadySongShow.com, Jamaicans.com, 25thCenturyRadio, OneHarmonyRadio.com, InboxMediaGroup.net, PEMGTV.com, WGLRO.com and others.
