Jamaica’s Minimum Wage Being Reviewed

Jamaica’s national minimum wage is now reportedly being reviewed.

The revelation came courtesy of Collette Risden Roberts, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, who while speaking with RJR revealed that the review exercise commenced earlier this year.

The permanent secretary also stated that the Minimun Wage Advisory Commission was instructed by the minister to begin their work following an increase in the minimum wage in March last year.

Jamaica’s current minimum wage is $6,200.

The most recent minimum wage increases took effect on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. The National Minimum Wage was increased from $5,600 to $6,200 per 40 hour work week.

The Minimum Wage for Industrial Security Guards was also raised from $204.97 per hour for a 40 hour work week (single-time rate) or $8,198 weekly to $221.35 per hour for a 40 hour work week or $8,854 weekly.
