Elaine Thompson Breaks 200m Meet Record At Jamaica International Invitational

On Saturday night (May 20), Jamaica’s Olympic sprint double gold medallist Elaine Thompson comfortably won the women’s 200m event at the 14th staging of the Jamaica International Invitational (JII) at the National Stadium in Kingston.

Her victory saw her set a new meet record with a time of 22.09 seconds, matching the fastest time in the world this year.

The American athletes Tori Bowie and Deajah Stevens both recorded 22.09 earlier this year to jointly hold the fastest time in the world for 2017.

The JII meet record that was improved by Thompson was 22.14 seconds and was set in 2006 by Sherone Simpson.

Thompson’s MVP teammate Shericka Jackson finished second in 22.61 with the American athlete American Shalonda Solomon taking third with a time of 22.64.

Last week Thompson also clocked a world leading 10.78 seconds at the 2017 Diamond League series in Shanghai, China.
