Novelette Grant Tipped to Become JCF’s First Female Commissioner

On Thursday, December 22, 2016, former Police Commissioner Dr. Carl Williams resigned, citing personal reasons.

His abrupt resignation led to widespread speculation regarding who would be his successor.

A few days later, Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Gordon Shirley announced that Novelette Grant would act as commissioner of police for a period of 90 days, beginning on January 7, 2017.

She is the second woman to act in the post of commissioner, with retired Javene Bent being the first.

However it now appears to be a distinct possibility that she could be selected to lead the force full time, becoming the first female commissioner of police for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in its 150th year of operation.

A recent post by the Gleaner states  “sources say the Police Service Commission is poised to announce that Acting Police Commissioner Novelette Grant has been selected to lead the Force.

That announcement is expected shortly.

“Ms Grant was appointed to act in the post but it appears that it was a test run and she has passed with flying colours,” one source told our news team.

“She has always enjoyed the respect of her colleagues, but in the time she has been acting she has convinced most persons that she has the mojo for the job. She is firm and fair and every member of the Force has seen her in action with her morning messages.”
