“I Got Caught With the Plastic Rice” Says Lisa Hanna

On December, 12, 2016 Jamaica’s Customs department announced it temporarily halted the clearance of rice at all ports of entry amid unconfirmed reports of persons unknowingly consuming plastic rice both locally and overseas.

A few days later Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Karl Samuda, stated that the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) had tested samples of rice and found no evidence of any contamination within them.

However, that announcement seemingly did little to allay the concerns of many Jamaicans who continued to use social media platforms to share their fears regarding the alleged ‘plastic rice’ on the market.

And several videos have since emerged which purportedly prove the existence of plastic rice on the island.

Member of Parliament for South East St Ann, Lisa Hanna has now uploaded a video to the social media platform Instagram with what she suspects to be plastic rice.

The video which was uploaded on  Wednesday with the caption: “Got caught with the “plastic” rice at home ?”

Hanna also stated that she has sent samples to be tested.
