Tropical Storm Likely to Become Hurricane, Projected to Impact Jamaica

Tropical storm threatens Jamaica

On Wednesday, Tropical Storm Matthew formed in the Lesser Antilles and is currently expected to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane over Caribbean waters before turning north for a possible direct hit on Jamaica by Monday.

Barbados was first to be impacted by the storm receiving strong winds and rain on Wednesday morning.

Current computer generated projections show the storm making a sharp turn to the north-northwest over the coming weekend, potentially placing Cuba and Jamaica directly in the sights of a Category 2 storm with 105 mph winds and 125 mph gusts by Monday.

The Meteorological Service Division has also warned that the storm “is likely to be a significant threat with impact on the island likely to start on Sunday, October 2.”
