Powell, Thompson Win at Lausanne Diamond League Meet

Powell, Thompson, victorious!

Jamaican sprinters Asafa Powell and Elaine were both victorious in their respective 100m events at the Lausanne Diamond League Meet.

Powell took gold in his first race since earning gold in the men’s 4x100m relay at the Olympic Games in Rio earlier this month.

He clocked 9.96 ahead of Ben Youssef Meïté of Côte d’Ivoire (2nd in 10.1) and Great Britain’s Joel Fearon. 10.05, who finished third.

Elaine Thompson completely separated herself from her competitors to win her 100m race by a considerable margin.

Despite not having her best start, Thompson’s tremendous acceleration at around the 50m mark helped propel her to victory in 10.78 seconds.

She finished ahead of two athletes from the United States – Jenna Prandini (11.11) and Morolake Akinosun (11.16).

Omar McLeod who recently won gold for Jamaica in spectacular fashion was bested by his biggest rival Orlando Ortega.

McLeod was defeated by one-hundredth of a second as he crossed the finish line in 13.12 seconds.

Ortega’s time was 13.11.
