Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson Equals 100m Breaststroke World Record
On Friday (August 26), Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson appeared to be in prime form at the Fina/Airweave Swimming World Cup meet in Paris as she equalled her own world record in the 100m breaststroke.
Her scintillating performance saw her complete the event in 1 minute 02.36, equalling the previous world record set in Doha, Qatar, 2014.
She finished ahead of Olympic bronze medalist Katie Meili of the United States who was second in 1 minute 03.52 seconds and Olympic silver medallist Yulia Effimova of Russia, who finished third in 1 minute 04.14.
Atkinson also finished second in the women’s 200m medley final with a time of 2 minutes 07.89 seconds.
The event was won by Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu who clocked 2 minutes o6.64.
Quick Fact: Atkinson won the 100-metre breaststroke at the 2014 Short Course World Championships in Doha (equalling the record set by Rūta Meilutytė in 2013), becoming the first black woman to win a world swimming title.
