Jamaica On Track to Have First Locally Owned Mobile Phone Service Provider

Jamaica is well on its way to have its first locally owned mobile phone service provider.

In a statement on Friday, Symbiote Investments Limited, confirmed that it’s application for a telecommunications license has been approved.

The addition of a third mobile services provider could potentially provide significant competition for the UK-owned operators of Flow Jamaica and the Irish-controlled Digicel.

Dr. Andrew Wheatley, Telecommunications Minister, says the license granted to Symbiote is in keeping with the Government’s mandate to facilitate an environment conducive to nation building and the provision of affordable telecoms services.

Finance Minister Audley Shaw, a few weeks ago told parliament’s Standing Finance Committee that a third mobile provider had been given approval by Cabinet.

However, at the time of the announcement, the name of the company was not revealed.
