Jamaicans to Receive Kidney Transplants Via TLC This Weekend

Three Jamaicans suffering from kidney disease are scheduled to receive transplants this weekend.

A team from the UK based Transplants Links Community, TLC, is currently on the island to perform the delicate surgical procedures.

Transplants Links Community is a charity that saves the lives of children and adults in the developing world who suffer from life-threatening end stage kidney disease.

According to Nationwide, TLC, will work alongside Dr. Curtis Yeates and his colleagues at the Cornwall Regional Hospital to perform the surgical procedures this weekend.

The team includes two surgeons, two kidney specialist and two support staff.

TLC has been to the island on two occasions prior to this most recent visit.

TLC’s Executive Director,  Mrs. Jewitt-Harris says there’s a high prevalence of kidney failure in Jamaica.

She says the country’s prevalence rate is high because of the number of persons with high blood pressure and diabetes.

Mrs. Jewitt-Harris is advising Jamaicans to look after their blood pressure and keep calories down.
