Jamaican Movie-Goers Spend Over 3/4 Billion at Cinemas in 1 Year Period

A struggling economy and more widespread movie piracy has not deterred persons in Jamaica from attending movie theatres.

Jamaican movie goers reportedly spent over three quarters of a billion dollars ($769 million) on tickets and food over a one year period leading up to June 2015 at the island’s major cinemas owned by Palace Amusement Company Limited.

The figure was made public in the company’s annual audited report and represents a 7.7 per cent increase over the same period a year earlier.

According to Loop News, Carib cinema in Kingston received the bulk of the spend, earning $299.6 million in box office receipts and $126.8 million on confectionery sales over the period. At other cinemas: box office and confectionery sales totaled $208 million at Palace Multiplex in Montego Bay; $125.3 million at Palace Cineplex in Kingston and $9.6 million at Odeon in Manchester.

Confectionery sales were roughly a third of box office receipts.
