Jamaicans Angered By German Athlete’s Reaction to Shermaine Williams
Earning a medal in an event as huge as a world championship final is certainly a big deal.
After placing second to Jamaica’s Danielle Williams in the final of the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the IAAF World Champions on Friday, an elated German athlete – Cindy Roleder reacted to another Jamaican athlete – Shermaine Williams in a manner that has gotten many persons in Jamaica and across the world angry.
Numerous persons from Jamaica and other countries across the world have since described her as racist, classless and accused her of exhibiting unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Following the outpour of negative comments, the following statement was posted on Cindy Roleder’s Facebook page:
“After I had realized that I won the silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the World Championships in Beijing yesterday I was extremely excited – it was such a massive surprise to me.
Today I read in several Facebook posts and comments that people have been disappointed or even shocked because of the way I reacted to Shermaine Williams’ offer of a handshake afterwards, accusing me of refusing it.
This is a big misunderstanding. I would like to set the record straight: I simply haven’t noticed her in this overwhelming moment. I have seen the TV footage, and to be honest it doesn’t look very good. But again: This is a big misunderstanding. As the pictures also show, I was completely focused on congratulating my friend Alina Talay on her bronze medal. I congratulate Shermaine Williams and all the other athletes who have participated in this great final. I hope you accept my apology.

First to begin, I did not read an apology in her statement.Secondly,courtesy costs NOTHING!! It’s a shame that in this advanced world there are ppl who still can’t multi- task….like saying hi,or congratulations to someone who reaches to give you a handshake…but was close enough to slap away the hand in a disrespectful manner. I wouldn’t buy this apology if she sold it downtown for a dollar. I will not accuse her of being racist. I will however say that she was very rude, and showed lack of sportsmanship. This video looks like you slapped away her hand intentionally. This so called apology you have here is just filled with excuses and lies. Send out a real apology for your behaviour.
