Grenada head coach handed FIFA ban and fine

Misconduct by Modeste proves costly for Spice Boyz

FIFA have handed Grenada head coach Anthony “Nixon” Modeste a four-match ban and fined him more than US$10,000 (£6,400) for misconduct against a match official.

Football’s governing body’s Disciplinary Committee handed down its decision on July 23 but only communicated their ruling to the Grenada Football Association last week.

Modeste, sent off by Belize referee Christopher Reid during Grenada’s heated first leg 2018 World Cup Qualification 1-0 reversal in Puerto Rico on June 12, breached FIFA’s rules by committing unsporting conduct towards a match official.

The 39-year-old automatically missed the return leg against Puerto Rico on June 16, which the Spice Boyz won 2-0 to progress on their World Cup Qualifying campaign.

Modeste will be banned from the touchline for the World Cup ties on September 4, at home to Haiti, and for the return leg on September 8 as well as for one further international match.

FIFA fined Modeste US$9,000 in application of the ruling and US$1,000 for the proceedings.

Modeste, a defender who plied his trade in England with QPR for seven seasons until a 2002 move to the domestic league in Jamaica with leading side Portmore United, can appeal the ruling to the FIFA Appeals Committee.
