Jamaican-born Deacon allegedly attacked, spat on in the UK because of his skin colour

An elderly Jamaican born church deacon claims he was the victim of a disturbing attack in the UK because of his skin colour.

75 year old Winston Powell told the Nottingham Post that he was standing at his local post office in Hyson Green when a man approached him, punched him in the eye and spat in his face before verbally abusing him over his skin colour.

Powell who is  a father of five, a grandfather-of-12 and great-grandfather-of-four, also told the Nottingham Post :

“I was shocked. It was definitely a racist attack. I didn’t think these things still happened in Nottingham.”

Mr Powell, a deacon at the Church of God Assembly in The Meadows, reported the incident to police and officers are investigating.

He and his family have spoken out in hope of finding the attacker, described as being a white male aged between 50 to 60.

Mr Powell, who suffers from angina and a leaking heart valve, had accompanied his 87-year-old friend Rita Wright to the branch.

He said his alleged attacker fled after a member of staff told him to get out.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokeswoman said: “CCTV is being collected at the moment as part of the investigation.”
