Jamaican Transport Minister, Dr. Omar Davies, says the transportation sector is on the verge of collapse.

He has signalled government’s intention to move quickly to increase the current fare structure.

The Transport Minister made the pronouncement, while opening the Sectoral Debate in Parliament, yesterday afternoon (May 7).

Dr. Davies states, that there is time for a fare adjustment, given the length of time since the last one, took effect.

He also stated that the fare structure used three years ago was unsustainable for today’s transport sector, stating that due to “changes in prices, the Exchange Rate, the price of fuel, it is impossible for the prices and fare of three years ago to make economic sense in the present….. the system will deteriorate and collapse sooner rather than later if the need for a fare adjustment is not acknowledged and responded to.”

In a quick retort, during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate, Opposition Spokesman on Transport, Karl Samuda, blasted the poor management of the JUTC, for the problems plaguing the company.

Mr. Samuda has stated, that the JUTC is not deserving, of a fare increase.
