Jamaican Netball Players Shine

Gifted Jamaican goal-shooter Romelda Aiken had another sensational game notching a game high 38 goals from 40 attempts to lead pre-season favourites Queensland Firebirds to a 61-53 win over the NSW Swifts in round four of the ANZ Netball Championship.

The undefeated Firebirds following the result moved to the top of the table with maximum 8 points from 4 games.

Aiken meanwhile improved her season’s tally to 181 goals on the season, just 16 behind Jamaican compatriot Jhaniele Fowler who leads the league with 197.

The former two-time league MVP who also had 2 rebounds during the game, now has a league best 19. She also put further distance between herself and WBP Magic’s irene Van Dyke in the all-time scoring race after notching goal number 2623.

  

Elsewhere Carla Borrego and Fowler both had outstanding performances but saw their respective teams come away with contrasting results.

Borrego had a game high 43 goals for the Adelaide Thunderbirds who had clinical display to run out comfortable 72-46 winners over the high flying West Coast Fever.

Adelaide following the win moved to 3rd in the table with 3 wins in 4 games, while Borrego moved to 4th on the scoring table with 124 goals.

During the match she also registered her 1500th career goal in the ANZ Championship.

Fowler in the meantime continued her hot start to her debut season notching a game high 47 goals form 52 attempts for the Southern Steel who suffered a narrow 59-56 defeat to the Central Pulse.

Fifth round action gets underway on Sunday, Borrego who will be the lone Jamaican in action, will line up for the Thunderbirds who host the Melbourne Vixens in Adelaide.

Aiken and Fowler will not feature as both the Firebirds and Southern Steel have been given byes.
